New captain Younus Khan led Pakistan's fightback with his 16th hundred to thwart Sri Lanka on the third day of the opening test in Karachi on Monday. The 31-year-old right-hander was unbeaten on 149 as the home team, replying to Sri Lanka's mammoth first innings total of 644-7, were 296-3 at stumps. Misbah-ul-Haq was the other not out batsman at stumps with 20. Pakistan need another 149 runs to avoid follow-on.

Coach Mickey Arthur confirmed on Monday that Jacques Kallis is in no danger of being booted out of the national team any time in the near future, despite being the most poorly-performed batsman of the last year. In fact, Kallis is probably the most secure player in the team after skipper Graeme Smith, and the word from Arthur is that South Africa's leading run-scorer is on the verge of a big score.

RUGBY
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) kept their hopes alive to make the FNB Varsity Cup play-offs when they demolished the Shimlas 44-8 in Johannesburg on Monday to erase memories of last year's 54-6 defeat. UJ's second victory of the competition was built on a pack that played to the ball, with their loose forwards and Torrie Meyer in particular to the forefront.

FOOTBALL

Everton's hopes of winning some silverware this season suffered a severe blow on Monday when their Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta was ruled out for the rest of the campaign. Arteta, the creative heartbeat of David Moyes's side, suffered the injury in the opening minutes of Sunday's goalless draw at Newcastle. The club revealed on Monday that their worst fears had been confirmed by a scan which showed that the 26-year-old had ruptured a cruciate ligament in his right knee.

GOLF

New Zealand teenager Danny Lee, who has set his sights on becoming the "next Tiger Woods," rocketed more than 400 places in the world golf rankings on Monday after his sensational Johnnie Walker Classic win. While Lee, 18, did not pick up the $300 000 winner's cheque because of his amateur status, he was awarded the full ranking points and now sits at 158 after being 562 a week ago.
