The Stormers defeated the visiting English tourists Saracens 43-33 in a friendly at Newlands on Sunday. At the break the Stormers led 24-16. Stormers coach Rassie Erasmus was happy with proceedings ahead of their Super14 campaign which starts in just over two weeks time.
CRICKET
Dillon du Preez took three wickets as the Gestetner Diamond Eagles edged past the bizhub Highveld Lions by eight runs in their Standard Bank Pro20 match at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Sunday. The Lions ended their innings on 148 for seven after needing 21 runs to win off the last two overs of their innings. The penultimate over was bowled by Du Preez who first had Dane Vilas (44) caught at cover by Boeta Dippenaar before he had Cliffe Deacon caught at long-on by a diving Ryan McLaren to leave the Lions needing 12 runs off the last over. Seamer McLaren held his nerve to concede only three runs off the last over to secure victory for the Eagles.
CRICKET
Mark Boucher's Australian tour came to an abrupt end at the weekend when X-rays revealed a fractured bone to his left big toe. Boucher suffered the injury when he was struck on the foot by a yorker from Australian speedster Shaun Tait during the third ODI in Sydney on Friday night.
GOLF
Deane Pappas sprinted to a comfortable eight-shot victory in the Dimension Data Pro-Am on the Gary Player Country Club course as lightning flickered all round the 18th green. He and his amateur partner Murray Winckler, the former international squash player and now director of Laurium Capital, also won the team segment of the competition. Their betterball score for the tournament was 33-under, and it took a 20-foot downhill putt from Pappas to secure the victory.
TENNIS
Three-time champion Roger Federer produced one of his greatest comebacks and Andy Roddick destroyed Tommy Robredo as the Australian Open roared into life on Sunday. Last year's winner Novak Djokovic beat former finalist Marcos Baghdatis in a late-night match and rising star Juan Martin del Potro also went through as some mouth-watering quarterfinals took shape. Federer looked out of it at two sets down before Czech 20th seed Tomas Berdych froze in the third, allowing the Swiss to come back 4-6, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 and stay on course for a record-equalling 14th Grand Slam title.
