CRICKET

Graeme Smith and his Proteas' Castle test squad arrived at practice on Tuesday to find a pitch which had been quite green on Monday looking a decided shade of white. The tour selectors nevertheless kept their options open as far as the final selection was concerned. Smith was also not reading too much into the fact that Australia will take two bowlers into the test, Peter Siddle and Jason Krezja, who have yet to play a home test compared to the multi-capped Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne of the previous tour 'down under'.

RACING

Subaru said on Tuesday it had withdrawn from the world rally championship at the end of the 2008 season because of the global financial crisis and falling car sales.

FOOTBALL

Premier League strugglers Blackburn Rovers announced on Tuesday they had sacked Paul Ince as their manager - just six months after appointing the former Manchester United and England midfielder. Rovers are currently second bottom in the table and on course for relegation from English football's lucrative top flight after winning just three of their 17 league games so far this season.
