ST FRANCIS BAY, 23 October 2008 - Jaco van Zyl shot a four-under-par 68 in the more favourable morning conditions on Thursday and has lined up his second Sunshine Tour title with a three shot lead at the Vodacom Origins of Golf Final.
The 29-year-old Pretoria pro overhauled first round leader Mark Murless with six birdies at the St Francis Links to set the 36-hole target at six-under-par 138.
“I got off to a bit of a shaky start with a light wind in the morning but things seemed to go my way. I was playing the correct side of the course when the wind picked up,” said van Zyl.
“This must be the only course where golfers don’t get time to breath; every single hole out there is very challenging.”
Murless, who remained flawless through the first nine holes, extended his lead to seven-under at the turn, but his luck ran out on the home stretch.
The four-time Sunshine Tour winner dropped four shots over his last six holes to finish alone in second with a disappointing 73.
Vanderbijlpark pro Bradford Vaughan took hold of third position on the leaderboard with a one-under-par 70, holing out for five birdies.
Defending champion Titch Moore (71), who had a mixed bag of eight birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey, is tied for fourth position with Nic Henning (73) at even-par 144.
“I feel very confident, although I am a little disappointed with two drops on the 15th and 17th,” said Moore. “All-in-all, I’m very happy with where I’m lying.
“I played a lot better today than yesterday and hopefully that momentum will carry through to the final round.
This is the type of course where the scoreboard can change in minutes.”
Henning double-bogeyed the eighth hole and added a bogey on the 18th after carding four birdies.
Local favorite and winner of last weeks Metmar Highveld Classic in Witbank, James Kamte fired a 70 to tie for seventh.
